news-crime-arrest-stockHOUSTON – Good eyes and a couple of good legs helped Houston Police nab one alleged robber and then arrest a second man following an incident on a local parking lot Tuesday night.

Police were called to Grocer’s Pride parking lot about 9 p.m. Sept. 23 after a woman was approached by two black males who demanded money, grabbed her purse and fled the scene on bicycles.

“We got a good description and it was radioed to our officers,” said Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles. “As officer B.J. Gladney was headed to the scene the officer spotted a suspect and pulled up along side him and told him to halt. The suspect jumped off his bike and ran into the woods and officer Gladney pursued and caught him and put him in handcuffs.”

Arrested was Robert Holmes, 20, of Pheba, who carried to the police department for questioning.

“We made the first arrest in about 10-minutes,” said Voyles. “Our investigation led to the arrest of Joshua Surall, 21, of Mantee.”

Voyles said police were tipped off that Surall knew people at Pineview Apartments south of Houston but a search there turned up no one. Police did get a call saying Surall was in an apartment at Chickasaw Village.

“We obtained an unmarked car and went to that location and slipped up on him,” said Voyles. “We did arrest him there and that was about 11 p.m.”

Voyles said good descriptions and observant patrol officers led to the quick arrests.

Voyles said the victim’s pocket book, a substantial amount of cash, credit cards and ID were recovered where the suspects said they were.

“We tell people to give up their stuff and give us a good description as quick as possible,” said Voyles. “These guys split up on bicycles after they hemmed in the victim and grabbed her purse. We’re just glad no one was hurt.”

Voyles said this is the first robbery on a parking lot in Houston in some time and police were reviewing video of the incident as part of their investigation.

Both Holmes and Surall were arraigned in Chickasaw County Justice Court Wednesday morning.
